Spoken of with the same reverence as "Ulysses" by James Joyce and "Gravity's Rainbow" by Thomas Pynchon, this 1000 page novel pushes the boundaries of what is possible in fiction. Wallace, an ex-tennis pro and a literary prodigy, broke every convention hje could think of. If it appeared in a Novel Writing 101 programme, he hammered it into the ground. Wallace used footnotes and endnotes all the way through his work - considered a taboo in fiction at the time, and, in many places, today - mixed tenses and altered rules of reader expectancies which influenced a generation of contemporary fiction authors in the US, without ever
quite passing over into the mainstream. Not by any means an easy read, Infinite Jest is one of those books which were brought in huge numbers and went straight-to-bookshelf and was a major influence on Indie classic "House of Leaves" by Mark Z Danielewski.
